Berkeley Lab has an opening for a Site Access Specialist in the Site Security Organization. Reporting to the Personnel Security Manager, this position will provide a broad range of security specialties to the Site Access Office as well as support the Foreign Visits and Assignments program. 


What You Will Do:

  • Coordinate with International Researchers and Scholars Office and sponsoring Divisions, when necessary, to obtain information to successfully adjudicate site access requests..

  • Print and issue Local Site Specific Only badges and parking permits to eligible employees, affiliates, and contractor workers.

  • Resolve issues related to malfunctioning badges and report issues to the Personnel Security Manager and security systems technicians.

  • Oversee daily visitor requests and communicate regularly with the Security Operations Center to ensure visitor pass requests are being processed in a timely manner.

  • Handle day-to-day requests and inquiries regarding parking at LBNL (e.g. request process, parking spaces, and requirements). Enforce the LBNL Parking Policy.

  • Execute the administration of the Foreign Visits and Assignments (FVA) program with processing visitors and assignees by proactively documenting and tracking foreign nationals in the Department of Energy's Foreign Access Central Tracking System (FACTS) and applicable LBNL information systems.

  • Collaborate on planning, coordinating, and conducting a variety of Lab-wide Foreign Visits and Assignments education and awareness activities.

  • Effectively and diplomatically communicate both orally and in writing with people at all levels.

  • Work collaboratively with Laboratory personnel, management and external contacts (e.g. LBNL Divisions and Departments, Department of Energy, University of California, and other national laboratories and local agencies). 

  • Other administrative and technical duties as assigned.  


What is Required:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend a variety of complex customer/operational/administrative requirements or problems and exercise good judgment to implement effective alternatives and solutions.

  • Basic knowledge of security and access control standards and best practices. 

  • Demonstrated experience working as part of a team with the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and willingness to work in a changing work environment.

  • Demonstrated effective organizational skills sufficient to independently establish priorities and ensure completion of projects in a timely manner.

  • Proficient level of computer skills and full knowledge of common business software, including Microsoft Office suite (e.g. email, calendaring, Excel).

  • Proficient level of word processing skills to produce error-free documents that include proper formatting and correct grammar usage and punctuation.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of individuals to include Laboratory employees, visitors, guests, and dignitaries.

  • Punctuality in opening, staffing and/or closing the Site Access Office, which operates at specific times Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Laboratory operations with ability to analyze and solve moderately complex and diverse problems that cross-cut several major functional areas is strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of UC and LBNL policies and procedures and Department of Energy Safeguards & Security Protection Program directives, specifically the foreign visits and assignments process.

  • Ability to work extended hours or days as needed.

  • Experience developing and improving processes and procedures flowed down from policy.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position typically operates M-F between the hours of 6:00AM - 5:00PM.
