Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Data Science Division has an opening for a Software and User Interface Engineer to join the team.

The Scientific Data Division fosters breakthrough discoveries through the application and development of novel data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in partnership with science domain experts. We perform focused research and development in the areas of data driven modeling and analytics, scalable methods, data lifecycle and infrastructure, digital integrity, security, and privacy for scientific computing, and sustainable software engineering with deep science partnerships.

The Usable Software Systems (USS) and Integrated Data Frameworks (IDF) groups in the Scientific Data Division (SciData) have an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE), who will join a team that is engaged in a wide array of research and development projects. This position will work with researchers and application scientists from the DOE Office of Science community, and faculty and students from universities both nationally and internationally, on a wide array of software development and data science problems serving the broader SciData mission.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Design and develop user interfaces, as part of diverse teams including domain scientists, software solutions to enable scientific research.
  • Gather and evaluate user requirements and conduct usability studies in collaboration with the team.
  • Provide input to domain science and/or computer science research papers suitable for submission to peer-reviewed venues.
  • Illustrate design ideas using UI mockups and prototypes, storyboards, process flows, and sitemaps.

 

In addition to the above, the CSE III also will:

  • Coordinate and/or lead the development and science teams on requirements and features.
  • Coordinate and/or lead the software development process for the team.
  • Present to audiences within and outside the lab.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; or three years and a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Knowledge of user interface design and user experience theory and methods.
  • Experience with one or more web user-interface stacks.
  • Experience designing and/or implementing user interfaces based on user requirements and project goals.
  • Ability to conduct analysis and work independently.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.

 

Additional Required Qualifications, CSE III:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; or six years and a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the user interface and/or user experience aspects of the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in JavaScript (and related technologies).
  • Experience creating and using prototype designs.
  • Knowledge of advanced graphical design techniques.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications for CSE III:

  • Experience acting as a software project manager or software developer line manager.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full time 5 year career-track term appointment that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
