The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is the high performance computing center for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science programs. NERSC is searching for a knowledgeable and inspired group leader for the Storage Systems Group (SSG) who will provide vision and guidance during this time when storage technologies for HPC systems are changing rapidly. The Storage Systems Group is responsible for supporting NERSC’s large scale parallel file systems, and archival storage systems with an eye towards balancing performance, stability, and usability for NERSC’s over 7000 users.

The NERSC archival system stores more than 250 PBs of data for the scientific community and a capacity based file system deployed in early 2020 provides nearly 100 PBs of online storage to the user community connected by a high speed storage area network (SAN). NERSC’s latest GPU based supercomputer, named ‘Perlmutter’ will provide nearly approximately 150PF of computing power to NERSC users including new capabilities such as a 30PB all-flash Lustre file system. New sensors, detectors, sequencers and telescopes are providing the scientific community larger and higher resolution data sets, which need to be analyzed, moved, managed, shared and stored. The Storage Systems Group lead is responsible for understanding these emerging requirements and deploying storage solutions with the SSG team to support NERSC’s broad user base. The Storage Systems Group lead will also be responsible for investigating new storage technologies and engaging with the vendor community on future roadmaps.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead a team that manages, supports and monitors NERSC’s large scale storage systems.
  • Assure NERSC’s storage systems meet the needs of NERSC’s 7000 users by providing high performing, available, and usable systems.
  • Provide effective line management to a group of approximately 10 Computer Systems Engineers by hiring excellent staff and working closely with SSG staff members. Assure staff are meeting goals, provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff and assure all staff have career growth opportunities.
  • Continuously evaluate new storage technologies and make recommendations on future storage directions for the center.
  • Work closely with other teams at NERSC to enable large-scale simulation, data analysis and AI applications to run on NERSC supercomputing and storage systems.
  • Provide budgetary input and oversight for NERSC’s storage systems.
  • Collaborate with other Department of Energy (DOE) Labs on future storage technologies and multi-lab storage efforts.
  • Create and develop a vision and strategy for the group and be part of NERSC’s leadership team.

What is Required :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (or related fields) and current applicable systems support and engineering experience, plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in a managerial role of complex computer systems or networking unit; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience administering and deploying storage systems of petabyte scale.
  • Deep and broad knowledge of storage technologies such hierarchical storage management, storage networking, distributed storage systems.
  • Experience with technologies such as Linux, InfiniBand, FC, SAS, SAN, NAS, NFS, HBA, Lustre, GPFS, BeeGFS, and object stores.
  • Ability to gather requirements from the scientific user community and turn requirements into system characteristics.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s or PhD degree in related fields.
  • Experience speaking at conferences.
  • Knowledge of object storage and non-volatile storage technologies.
  • Prior experience with HPC applications, workflows and computational systems.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on May 1, 2021.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
