Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) Engineering Division has openings for Student Assistants with Mechanical Engineering background.

You will work together with a lead engineer and other student assistants to develop CAD models and engineering requirements for multi-disciplinary, large-scale science projects. Currently, a particular need exists to support the preliminary design effort for two important Department of Energy projects: BioEPIC as well as DUNE. Both projects address urgent and fundamental scientific questions.

For BioEPIC you will work on developing CAD models integrating novel experimental facilities for biological as well as soil research within a new LBNL flagship building complex for biological systems science. You will support important research understanding microbial and plant systems within the context of a particular real-world environment at scales ranging from molecular to ecosystem levels. This research will address global climate change and consequences to our food supply.

For Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) you will be involved in laying out the subterranean cavern for several, multi-story-sized near detectors for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. The cryogenically cooled detectors will utilize the world’s most intense neutrino beam at Fermi National Accelerator Lab. The leading-edge, international experiment aims for groundbreaking discoveries answering questions about the origin of matter (why is the universe made of matter rather than antimatter) and the grand unification of forces and stability of matter.

It's an exciting time to participate in both projects! You will be able to contribute in the overall engineering design process and will be part of a large scale engineering undertaking. As a student assistant, your time commitment is flexible 8-20 hours during the university year and up to full time during the summer or school holidays.

As a self-motivated candidate, you will primarily work on computer CAD models. Together with a lead engineer and other students, you will benefit from exposure to large science projects while being mentored in a protected work environment.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform 3D modeling and design work using Solidworks or Creo Parametric CAD software.

  • Lead sub-system design and engineering tasks and present at collaboration meetings.

  • Assist with the development of project documentation and requirements documents.

  • Perform literature and internet research to solve design and engineering challenges.

  • Assist in performing engineering analysis.

  • Collaborate with vendors or suppliers to determine appropriate design approaches.

  • Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers and architects.

What is Required:

  • A full-time student during the semester enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program.

  • Familiarity with mechanical CAD modeling Solidworks or Creo Parametric.

  • Basic understanding of engineering principles.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform.

  • Ability to make clear presentations and write reports.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  • This is a part-time, 1 year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
