Berkeley Lab’s Government and Community Relations Office and K-12 Programs Team has an opening for a Science Education and Communications Student Assistant, to assist with logistical planning of STEM events for K-12 students and content creation of K-12 STEM education media. This position will begin on a part-time basis during the fall and spring semester before transitioning into a full-time position during the summer. 


What You Will Do:

  • Document and write descriptive copy about K-12 programs and events. 

  • Edit written work, develop content and maintain the K-12 website. 

  • Coordinate volunteers and logistics for K-12 outreach events. 

  • Conduct literature searches, data collection (usually surveys and interviews), file management, prepare printed/electronic media, and other duties, as needed.


What is Required:

  • Must be a student enrolled in classes pursuing a degree at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

  • Experience and/or a strong interest in outreach and working with students in grades K-12.

  • Successful completion of coursework in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

  • Strong writing and editing skills.

  • Proficiency in office software (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Google applications).

  • Proficient in communication via social media platforms.

  • Willingness to work in a flexible, changing environment.


Notes:

  • This is a part-time, 8-month student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Schedule flexibility. 

  • Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
