Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Molecular Foundry (MF) has an opening for a Theoretical Modelling and Simulation Postdoc to work in the area of non-equilibrium dynamics for quantum information science applications.

This project is part of a multi-PI program initiated at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to synthesize novel qubits using intense pulses of ions and lasers. The postdoc will work under the supervision of Dr. Liang Tan at the theory facility of the Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop methods to predict how swift heavy ions and energetic electrons result in color center formation.

  • Develop methods to predict the coherence lifetimes of the resulting color centers.

  • Provide technical leadership in the area of simulation of far from equilibrium processes involving electron-ion interactions.

  • Utilize new developments in computational software to predict and understand experimental results.

  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team at the Molecular Foundry and the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division

  • Provide complementary expertise to experimental synthesis and characterization efforts

  • Write both independent and collaborative manuscripts.

  • Publish their work in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

  • Present their work at national meetings and at regular group meetings.

  • Contribute positively to the active research culture at the Molecular Foundry.

  • Work in a safe and healthy manner consistent with EH&S guidelines.

  • Respect diversity and be inclusive in their interactions with others.

What is Required:

  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline

  • Familiarity with the fields of warm dense matter and/or quantum information science.

  • Programming and mathematical modeling experience

  • Strong publication record in top-rated scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports and research posters.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to guide and train junior researchers.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 3 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
