Timepix Project Scientist
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for a Project Scientist to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will report to the Spin and Electric Correlation Lead and PI on the Timepix Project funded by the DOE Scientific User Facilities Division, the Project Scientist incumbent will be responsible for the commissioning of a new high-vacuum Timepix based soft X-ray detector developed specifically for performing nanosecond X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy. In this role, you will join a small world-class team conducting X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and coherent X-ray scattering experiments on a wide variety of condensed matter systems.
This is a limited scope appointment of approximately 5 months in duration and will start on August 2, 2025, and promptly end on or before December 31, 2025.
What You Will Do:
- Develop installation and commissioning of a new Timepix based detector.
- Perform X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy experiments using the detector at the newly built Cosmic beamline at the ALS.
- Develop a toolkit using Python or Matlab to analyze experimental data.
- Collaborates with other research teams and scientists.
- Publishes work in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
- Contributes positively to the active research culture.
- Works in a safe and healthy manner consistent with EH&S guidelines.
What is Required:
- PhD in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science, or equivalent.
- Prior experience of working with a state-or-art soft x-ray detector, preferably a photon counting detector.
- Experience in writing codes to reduce and analyze scattering data, preferably photon correlation data.
- Ability to perform independent hands-on work in an experimental endstation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Timepix or photon counting detectors.
- Experience in Photon Correlation Spectroscopy methods.
- Knowledge of resonant scattering methods.
- Working knowledge of high vacuum practices.
